Lindsey Salatka, author of “Rim to Rim,” Winner in the 2021 San Diego Memoir Showcase. Interview by Laura Engel, SDMWA Board President
LE: Lindsey, Congratulations on being a winner in the Showcase. In a nutshell – Please tell us about your winning memoir piece for the 7th Annual San Diego Memoir Showcase.
LS: My piece is called Rim to Rim. It is the story of the time I hiked down the Grand Canyon and back up the other side on the same day without preparation. Not my finest hour, let me tell you!
LE: What has been your experience taking classes/workshops and writing memoir in San Diego?
LS: I wish I could take more classes, but my time is not my own these days! Every class and workshop I am able to take inspires me to continue on this journey of writing because of the joy, connection, and healing it brings to every aspect of my life.
LE: This year has been unsettling in so many ways. How do you think that has affected your writing?
LS: I think it has opened me up to be braver and speak my truth. Life is short and we only have so long to communicate and connect with our tribe.
LE: Lindsey, what are you most excited about when it comes to participating in the 7th Annual San Diego Memoir Showcase??
LS: The gorgeous venue! What a spectacular opportunity to celebrate our stories in such an incredible space surrounded by so much brilliance and talent.
LE: What advice would you give new memoir writers?
LS: Don’t give up! Memoir is the most challenging genre but also the most liberating. Share your stories even when you’re petrified! It’s scary but worth it. The world needs you.
LE: Again, congratulations Lindsey, we are so excited to see your story performed on stage at the Conrad in La Jolla on Dec. 7th!
