Traumatic events may render us speechless. At the same time, we feel compelled to recount what has happened, to tell the tale of the unspeakable, to bear witness. This interactive presentation is based on my 12 years as a writer with mental health experts at the National Center for Child Traumatic Stress, as well as my experience writing my own memoir, Don’t Go Crazy Without Me. In this talk, I offer specific tips for getting past obstacles internal and external. How do we construct a coherent narrative from chaos? How do we create a chronology when trauma fractures our sense of time? How do we tell the story with authenticity and compassion? How do we tolerate the re-experiencing in the process of creating a vivid and visceral account? How do we get beyond the therapy draft that serves our own psychological needs to a work of literary art that reaches readers?
