The IMWA is excited to announce Marilyn Woods, the author of “After Goya: A Mature-ish Fairytale,” as our February 2024 Member of the Month! Please take a minute to read Marilyn’s interview with IMWA Board Member Janet Hafner.
1. How did you first discover IMWA?
I took a class with Marni Freeman
2. Have you always been a writer?
I majored in Journalism with the hope of being another Lois Lane but immediately got into broadcast where I spent my entire career. Did not write seriously until 2015, when I lost my husband.
3. What impact do you think writing classes have made on your writing?
I take writing classes religiously—not only for inspiration but for accountability.
4. We’d love to hear about what you are presently writing.
I’m presently writing short pieces—my new goal—write SHORT! I would hope to put together a collection of these in book form.
5. Who are your favorite authors? Favorite memoirs?
Abigail Thomas, Ann Patchett, William Maxwell, and most recently, Tommy Orange—in no particular order! My all-time favorite memoir is “ A Three Dog Life” by Abigail Thomas. (I am such a fan!)
6. Any advice for new writers?
Surround yourself with writing friends and gather to write often.
7. Marilyn, we are so excited about your book that was published in January. Please tell us about your book and your launch.
My book launch at the Pauma Valley Country Club happened January 18 and was such a fabulous event. I love speaking to groups and do it regularly in my work at The San Diego Museum of Art, where I am a docent—but I particularly love speaking to women’s groups and book clubs.
Here’s what “After Goya: A Mature-ish Fairy Tale” is about: It began with a gift. An oil painting that carried with it a bit of magic, the kind that some (inaccurately) believe belongs exclusively to the young.
On the brink of complete meltdown from the boredom and isolation of COVID-19 existence, an aging princess living alone high on a hill encounters a worldly prince in hot pursuit. His love of art and adventure is appealing, as are his dapper charms, but instead of falling into his arms, she resists for reasons even she can’t fully comprehend. This later-in-life romance is fraught with misgivings, false starts, and spells that must be broken.
Part real, part make-believe, it’s a story of love after immense loss, second chances, and weaving your own “happily ever after.”
