When did you begin to write, and what was your first project?
I always loved writing. I started writing articles for local newspapers and magazines, then decided to write a novel, a romantic comedy called Tales From the Crib, after my daughter was born in 1997. From there, I’ve written several novels and We’ll Always Have Paris, a mother-daughter travel memoir.

What would you like to work on next?
The Girls of the Glimmer Factory, my second historical novel, is coming out next week, which I’m very excited to promote. It’s a story about the strength of women’s friendship, set in the Theresienstadt concentration camp that the Nazis created specifically for propaganda purposes. I just finished a shitty first draft of my next novel, loosely based on my mother’s experiences as a “beard,” a fake girlfriend for gay men, in the 1950s in Greenwich Village. Working title: The Greenwich Village Fiancée.

What’s your favorite memoir?
Of course, Judy Reeves’ memoir When The Heart Says Go is a wonder. And I love Jerimiah Moss’s latest Feral City. I don’t know if it’s a memoir, but it’s written in such a strong first-person voice. I adore how much he appreciates the gritty side of New York City. His observations are deliciously wicked.

What can you tell us about your upcoming book launch and other events?
After a series of pre-launch events in San Diego, I am leaving for a tour of the Midwest and South. In the spring, I will head to the East Coast. For a complete list of events, please check out jennifercoburn.com/events. My favorite part of the job is hitting the road and meeting readers! People have fascinating questions and comments, and it’s just a joy to get out there and hear them.
